Review

Aroma – 10/12

Grainey and crackery malt strikes first at a medium level.  A low amount of grassy and floral hop notes compliments this.  Clean fermentation profile with no hints of alcohol.   Touch of sulfur as it warms.

Appearance – 2.5/3

Deep straw liquid pours with brilliant clarity.  Stark white medium and large bubbles make up a 1.5in head that fades with below average retention.

Flavor – 17/20

Continental pilsner malt hits the tongue first.  Grainy notes and a fresh baked bread character are at a moderate intensity.  Low-medium perception of sweetness.  A low level of spicy-peppery hop character pops out in the midtaste with a bit of floral as well.  The malt character sticks around through the finish, but doesn’t linger on the aftertaste.   Balance is slightly toward maltly sweetness than bitterness.

Mouthfeel – 5/5

A moderate body lasts throughout the taste.  There’s almost a touch of creaminess as well.  The finish is soft, but punctuated with a carbonic bite.  Medium-low carbonation.

Overall Impression – 9/10

A great example of a Helles.  As with most good versions, pilsner malt is the focus here with it’s delicate character expressed well.    Only minor touches would push this up to world class.  The carbonation in this can seemed a bit low for the style, with the head retention not lasting with the best versions of the style.

Rating – 43.5/50

This finishes off the recent run of Austin Beerworks seasonal reviews.  This beer being released in August, places It right during prime pool and tubing season.  Great execution makes this an easy drinking thirst quencher.
